Mandelbaum House Celebrates Kindness and Community Spirit

Mandelbaum House is proud to announce Oliver Ergas as the recipient of the 2023 Eddie Jaku OAM Mensch Award. This prestigious award, presented annually since 2018, is voted for by residents and staff. It honours the resident who exemplifies the qualities of integrity, caring, kindness, and strong community spirit that defined Holocaust survivor and philanthropist Eddie Jaku OAM.

Oliver, from Chile is pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering Honours in Mechanical Engineering, stood out among ten outstanding nominees. Oliver received heartfelt endorsements from fellow residents and staff. Described as an “upstanding resident with a great sense of humour,” “kindest and most welcoming,” and “always friendly and helpful,” Oliver has earned the respect and admiration of the entire Mandelbaum House community.

Beyond his academic pursuits, Oliver’s commitment to the well-being of his peers was outstanding. He has served as Chief Fire Warden, ensuring the safety of residents, and was entrusted by his community to be treasurer of the Resident Society.

As the 2023 recipient, Oliver received a copy of Eddie Jaku’s inspiring book “The Happiest Man on Earth,” a commemorative certificate, and a gift voucher. He joins a distinguished group of past recipients who continue to inspire others with their selfless actions and positive spirit.

Mandelbaum House provides a safe and supportive home for young adults on Sydney University campus; recently celebrating its 28th year, it is the only kosher Jewish college in Australia. The House fosters a vibrant community built on respect, inclusivity, and compassion; values that resonate with Eddie Jaku’s remarkable life.
